This project proposes to explore the role of power in Taiwan 's media organizations. The new power discourse and organization theories are used, not the classical journalism discourse, in order to re-examine how journalists are influenced by powers and develop new strategies for their autonomy within the newsroom.

In the classical journalism discourses, powers are negative and are used to weaken journalists' utonomy by owners. This study conversely reveals that, besides owners' direct control, powers can result from procedures of news production or hierarchies of newsrooms. They can integrate effectively different journalists' tasks in everyday news production.

This study further shows that journalists' loyalties for their organization and profession result in the feudal power relationship. The latter reversed so as to discipline journalists. Finally, we suggest developing new strategies to resist this indirect power control.
