Professionalism is increasingly becoming a salient issue among Chinese journalists and journalism educators. What is journalistic professionalism? How is it being constructed in China's media reforms? How does the construction process reflect contradictions and tensions in China's media reforms? These are the questions addressed in this paper. We argue, professionalism is a discourse on journalistic practices and institution; it is also an ideology based upon the notions of public service and public interests, further, it is a model of social control. In this paper, choosing how journalists imagine their professional fame as a point of entry, we examine the discursive practices of constructing professionalism in China's media reforms. We show that professionalism in China has multiple traditions, faces constraints from various forces, and reveal itself in a fragmented and localized form. Based on the empirical analysis, we demonstrate that constructing the discourse of professionalism is an important dimension of the ongoing media reforms. It also signifies the deepening of the reforms.
